Buying Wood: Are You Getting What You’re Paying for?

Category: Burning Wood, Wood Heat |

I started using my wood stove again this year for the first time in maybe 7 years. Actually, we’ve never used it for heating the house before. When we moved into our home in 1999 the stove came with it; it had its own alcove of granite and mortar and was a nice touch to keep my father warmer during the winter months–or at least when we got around to building a fire.

Well, oil prices have forced my hand. I had my chimney check out (A OK) and bought, what now I hope to be, a full cord of wood. I’ve since found out that a "cord" of wood can have many meanings. Different wood cutters/sellers have their own concepts of what a cord of wood equates to.

A Full Cord of Wood should be 4 feet high by 4 feet wide by eight feet long (4′ x 4′ x 8′) and have a volume of 128 cubic feet.

A Face Cord or Rick of Wood is four feet high by eight feet long and is as wide as the individual firewood pieces, but averages 16 inches wide. A 16-inch wide face cord is equal to one-third of a full cord.

So now that you know this, what happens when your purchased wood is delivered by a pick up truck? How do you know your load isn’t a few logs short? Or much more…

Two full-size pick-up truck loads (8 foot box), or Four compact pick-up truck loads (6 foot box) equals one full cord of wood whether the wood is stacked carefully so it is about level with the truck box sides, or is thrown into the truck box with the top of the pile about as high as the cab.
